It’s that time again when Countdown’s customers help fundraise for lifesaving equipment for our Waikids.
Now in its twelfth year, the Countdown’s Kids Hospital Appeal has raised over $1.3 million for children’s hospital across New Zealand. Last year they raised a whopping $139,750.00 for our Waikato Child and Youth Health Service, Waikids.
This year’s Waikids’ wish list will focus on children living with diabetes as well as children who live in rural communities.
Waikato Hospital’s Child Health Manager Christine Woolerton says “We have 132 children under the age of 15 who live with diabetes and are supported by our outpatient services.
“The demand on our diabetes service continues to increase and in 2017 we had 27 new diagnoses. We need to be able to respond to this growing need and thanks to the advances in diabetes technology we can do this more efficiently,” says Christine.
“We also cover one of the largest rural areas in New Zealand and it’s important no matter where our Waikids get treatment in the Waikato that they feel comfortable and safe. Play therapy is so important in achieving this, and with the help of one of our Waikato Hospital play therapists we visited some of the rural hospitals to provide the best advice on space and equipment that would achieve better child friendly environments in Thames, Te Kuiti, Tokoroa and Taumarunui.
“We can’t thank Countdown enough and their customers for their relentless drive to support our services and our children and their families who need lifesaving healthcare.”
This year’s wish list target is $90,000 for items that will help change our Waikids:
- $50,000 for glucose monitoring equipment that will change lives through new technologies for children living with diabetes.
- $40,000 for Waikids who live rurally by creating better child friendly environments in our outpatient clinics in Thames, Te Kuiti, Tokoroa, Taumarunui.
The Countdown Appeal is already underway running from 6 August to 28 October 2018.
100% of funds raised in local Waikato stores are donated to our Waikids services.
Last year Waikids were able to purchase a cardiovascular ultrasound system for the Neonatal New Born Unit (NICU).
