As the van neared the Hamilton roundabout its occupants couldn’t believe what they were seeing – a four-wheel-drive veered across four lanes of traffic toward them, ploughing through a steel fence and accelerating into a furniture store.

The van carrying seven young men turned and followed the trail of destruction to where the white BMW was wedged into the side of the Target building on Te Rapa Rd.

It was just after 6.30pm as the former Hamilton Boys’ High School students piled out of the van to help, wrenching open the driver’s door to find a man slumped in the seat unconscious.

They didn’t know it then but the victim was Waikato Hospital specialist anaesthetist and Waikato District Health Board chief medical officer Dr Tom Watson.
