Board chair reveals preferred candidate

Nigel Murray

Nigel Murray

As you are aware the Board has been searching for a new Chief Executive to replace Craig Climo who will leave us at the beginning of August.

I would prefer to have left any announcements about our progress to have waited until negotiations with our preferred candidate are completed.  Unfortunately I have become aware that someone has chosen to talk to the media about that candidate and they intend to run a story tomorrow.

In the hope that you read it here before you read it in the newspaper tomorrow I want to tell you that we are in discussions with Dr Nigel Murray MBE.

Nigel is currently the Chief Executive of Fraser Health Authority in British Columbia, Canada, where he has been for nearly eight years.  Fraser is significantly larger than our DHB but Nigel is from the Waikato and is very keen to return to serve our community.

Prior to moving to Canada Nigel was the Chief Executive at Southland DHB for a brief time, and prior to that Deputy Chief Executive at Auckland DHB where he planned and led the rebuilding and reorganisation of the Auckland DHB.

Nigel led the government side of the industrial negotiations with nurses and doctors in 2006/7. We are aware those were challenging negotiations for everyone involved, so we have taken particular effort to talk to people who have worked with Nigel both in New Zealand and Canada to ensure he will be a good fit for our DHB.

The universal response so far has been that Nigel is both an outstanding individual and an outstanding leader. The board has agreed that once these checks are satisfactorily completed we should begin negotiating a contract with him. We believe that Nigel will make a significant contribution to our organisation.

I expect negotiations to be straightforward but any agreement must be signed off by the State Services Commission.  I hope to be able to formally confirm his appointment in the next few weeks.
