The Waikato DHB appointed Dr Nigel Murray as its Chief Executive after an exhaustive international search, and extensive reference checking with current and previous employers and colleagues in Auckland, Southland, and Canada.
The reference checks, including those from the Ministry of Health in Canada all pointed to Dr Murray being an outstanding candidate.
We were aware of the review that was being undertaken at Fraser Health and specifically explored with the BC Ministry of Health what implications that might have regarding Dr Murray’s performance. We were assured that there would be none and that Dr Murray had done a good job at Fraser Health.
We were also aware that Dr Murray was the lead negotiator in the industrial negotiations with senior and junior doctors in 2006, and that those negotiations were very stressful on all parties.
Dr Ian Powell of the Association of Senior Medical Specialists has made various assertions about Dr Murray and we have taken particular effort to check those out with his various employers. We have found no basis for any of his concerns.
Dr Murray starts work at Waikato DHB on Monday and we fully expect him to perform to the level his referees assure us he will.
